ICECUBES the comic strip #358

Hello friends, here's a new ICECUBES strip! It has been difficult for me to carve out the time to do strips on a more regular basis. The fact is that my day job takes up all of my time. For me to be able to spend more time drawing ICECUBES, the strip would need to make money. Right now the only source of revenue is from subscribers. For only $1 a month you can support the strip and read all the classic ICECUBES strips as well as members-only posts.

The other revenue is from clicks on the ads on the website. Although that only amounts to a few pennies per click, if the site could get more ad clicks it would make a big difference. So by all means click on the ads!

My hope is that in the near future I will be able to put together the Kickstarter campaign for the new book. That will be a big boost to the comic and I'm sure you are eager to get a new book as well. Additionally, I am open for commissions. For only $20 you get an original Leroy Brown drawing! Finally, the original art for the comic strips is always for sale. If you can't find it at the store, just send me an email to see if the strip you want is available. Funnies #9 from 1937!

This “Funnies” comic book is from the early era of transition to comic books. Comic strips have existed since the late 1880s but comic books started in the 1930s. Of course they began by re-printing the comic strips from newspaper syndicated strips before any new characters and stories were developed. So, this issue #9 carries newspaper strips such as Alley Oop, Captain Easy, Mutt & Jeff. The art on this is so bad it makes my teeth hurt, but such was the birth of comic books!

Daredevil Dan Comic Book Ad

I found this cool retro toy ad on the back cover of a Harvey Comics comic book from the ’70s. “Tournament of Thrills” and “Wild Power Spin-Outs”. Came with a “Mustang II”, Daredevil Dan, hook, thrill-bar, jump-ramp, barrels and a T-stick to rev up the car. 😀 I bet it was a bunch of fun too! Kenner always had the best cheap plastic toys and the best ads for them. Still amazes me to think that Kenner belonged to the General Mills cereal company. I always wondered who they would get to illustrate those ads. Whoever did it had to ink all the lettering and cram all that information into that drawing, not that easy!

Check out this goofy guy that popped up while I was inking the latest ICECUBES comic strip. I was just practicing before jumping onto the strip and this guy showed up. You can see I also practiced my lettering. ICECUBES is all hand-drawn, including he lettering (which is the hardest part!)
